MIG welding process?

MIG welding uses a tool called a welding gun, which feeds a filler wire electrode at a constant speed pre-selected by the operator. The gun also emits a protective gas while the weld is placed. This gas protects the welding area from atmospheric gases such as nitrogen and oxygen, which can cause some serious weld defects like porosity which results in weak, defective weld.

Advantages of it

The MIG welding process can be used to create a high-strength weld with excellent appearance with little need for sanding or cleaning. The use of shielding gas allows the welder to run at a continuous and at fast speed, making the process fast.

MIG welding can be used on any metal surface and has the ability to weld thin materials. MIG welding is a fast, efficient and easy process, perfect for most applications. If you have some big projects, a MIG machine is probably the best choice.

TIG Welding?

When it comes to clean, efficient and beautiful welds, the TIG process simply cannot be beaten. Artists and ornamental welding professionals often prefer this process for its precision and overall clean appearance.

How it works

Instead of a metal electrode, TIG welding uses a non-consumable tungsten electrode. Tungsten can be heated to a very high temperature before melting, so TIG welding requires an additional filler to be applied.

As an operator, you will feed this filler into the welding area with one hand while operating the torch with the other. You will also use a foot to operate a foot control that dictates heat input while welding.

Advantages of it

The TIG process provides the cleanest and most aesthetically pleasing work possible. The process gives the welder great control over the weld, allowing stronger, higher quality welds.

When it has to look absolutely perfect and you have time to spend between MIG and TIG welding, TIG welding is the technique of choice. It is perfect for works of art, ornamental designs, stainless steel and automotive applications.

Disadvantages

Between MIG and TIG, TIG welding is much more difficult to learn than the other methods. It requires a highly qualified operator because it requires the simultaneous use of both hands as well as a foot.

TIG welding is also significantly slower than MIG, which requires the surface of the workpiece to be absolutely immaculate. All paint, rust, and dirt must be removed and the welding area must be sufficiently clean.

Differences between them

The main difference between MIG and TIG welding is that one process uses a continuous feed wire in MIG welding, while TIG welding uses long welding bars and the operator must feed them slowly.
